The Fate of the Furious Review

The Fate of the Furious

Or is it Fast & Furious 8?

The Fast and the Furious 8?

Fast 8? Never mind..

The Fate of the Furious (officially titled, I checked) is the 8th instalment of this surprisingly long running franchise which got a new lease of life, right around Fast Five. Or Fast & Furious 5 : Rio Heist. Going from a non-working direction of basing their movies around car culture to a working one involving heist elements, secret-agents, shattering logic & physics laws – Furious 8 is finally here, guns blazing. So how does it fare?

Honestly, what do you expect at this point? Its nuts. And fun.

Surprising in this movie’s case, also emotionally resonant. F8 brings back some of that car-racing culture they left behind. It isn’t of much significance to the rest of the plot but makes up for a nice little homage. Speaking of the plot, this one has a lot of connections to the previous instalments, giving them a nice little universe of their own. Quality-wise, its standard Fast & Furious template – Think of creative ways to play with motor-vehicles and base a storyline around it. The whole scenario is as ludicrous as Ludacris trying to sound knowledgeable throwing around technical terms. But hey, eye-candy cars are here. Who cares?

Overall, The Fate of the Furious feels the weakest amongst the second-half of the franchise. Dialogue gets mundane at times. Theron’s acting is off-mark or her casting is. Johnson and Jason’s jabs at each other – greatest source of entertainment. Euphoria achieved at our protagonist’s victories and a nice sentimental send-off in the end.

Worth a watch. Not multiple.

Rating : 2.5/5
